We get it — starting a new fitness routine can be hard. You may have heard that yoga is “too easy” or “way harder than it looks” from your friends. Don’t let their experiences impact your expectations! We’ve put together 10 tips for beginners like you. Try doing these to prepare for your practice and help you grow in it!
1. Avoid wearing clothes with zippers, as these can be uncomfortable and poke you in certain poses. Keep in mind that you will be going upside down and twisting during class so you may want to avoid baggy clothes.
2. Consider wearing a braid or low pony tail to your yoga practice to avoid uncomfortable lumps in your hair when lying on your back or doing inversions.
3. Bring a mat and a water bottle to class. If you forget your mat or aren’t ready to purchase your own, ask the instructor to loan you one for class. All YogaFit studios have water fountains, so you can fill up when you get there!
4. Arrive to your yoga class 10 minutes early so you can set up your mat, fill your water bottle, and settle down before class begins.
5. Set your mat up close to the instructor and in front of the mirror. This will allow you to easily see the instructor demonstrate and check your alignment in the mirror.
6. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after class to stay hydrated.

9. Continue going to yoga class two to four times a week. Consistency will help you improve your practice, reap the benefits, and learn to truly love yoga.
10. The most important tip to take away from this is to avoid judgement. Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is a beginner once; don’t worry about not being as flexible as your neighbor. Yoga is about self-improvement and self-acceptance. Try your best and forget the rest!
